In Search of Sin’s Sex Toy Review: Sex Toy Guide |
| The Womyn'sWare Sex Toy Guide Joy LaFille finds out more than she ever needed to know about dildos and vibrators and plugs. Oh my! Normally, you expect a store's [guide] to be full of marketing speak and slogans explaining why you simply can't live without this or that product. Especially in a [guide] full of sex toys, the products tend to be photographed with carefully posed models sporting toothy grins or sultry pouts, their surgically fine-tuned bodies sporting outfits that would look good on perhaps one out of twenty normal women. This is why, when I paged through the fifth edition of the Womyn'sWare sex toy guide for the first time, the following sentence bowled me over: You don't "need" our products, but if you have a healthy sexual appetite and a desire to explore new sexual frontiers, you may want our products. Excuse me? A company that doesn't claim the world will come to an end if you down own their merchandise? Where were the implications that you're a sexual freak if their products don't work for you? What about the promises that their products can make you happier, healthier, richer, and more attractive to the object of your affection? Something was obviously rotten in the state of Denmark. The rest of the guide was similarly low-key. Instead of photos of twenty year-old babes lovingly clutching dildos (or even stranger, in my opinion, licking them), the guide features drawings of each toy with a word of explanation beside it. Each section starts off with something sorely lacking in the sex industry: information. For example, the first section in the guide discusses dills (Womyn'sWare speak for dildos). Ever wondered about the material that most dills are made out of? I certainly have. This section discusses in detail what Womyn'sWare dills are made out of (silicone), and why they chose that substance above other more common materials such as rubber or vinyl. It discusses care and cleaning, choosing the right length and girth, and a woman's physiological response to penetration. Each of the other sections (Vibes, Health, Dildo Harnesses, Nipples, Butts, Bondage Gear and Novelties) is preceded by an equally informative blurb. Huh. A company that wants you to get the right sex toy for you, instead of the sex toy that gives them the biggest profit margin. What a concept. Don't get me wrong, Womyn's Ware is still a business, and their goal is to make money and stay alive, just the same as any other business. The difference is that their method of making money is based on creating informed customers who know what they want, and subsequently, are happier with their purchase. Information about their toys is doled out generously, with the end result that the reader gets a message that is remarkably rare in this industry -- or in fact, our society. The message is this: your sexuality is your own to discover and explore. What rocks one person's casbah isn't necessarily going to rock yours, and there's nothing wrong with that. If you want to explore something new, the information is there for you to use. If you don't, that's okay too. In a society that tends to shove a stylized, hyper-sexuality down our throats, it's a refreshing approach. Please visit Womyn's Ware for more info.
